Burger Fresh History

"Burger Fresh", one of only two remaining independent burger shops in Conroe, has begun an exciting new chapter in its history with the purchase by the Canada family on March 1, 2018. In continuous operation at the same location for over 21 years, "Burger Fresh" is the only restaurant in Conroe having been recognized with a Top 15 finish out of over 250 restaurants across Texas in the annual Texas Monthly best burgers of Texas contest. Aptly names, the "Award Burger" remains on the menu today.

New owner, James Canada, has "jazzed up" the menu emphasizing all fresh meats locally sourced when possible and adding new southern deep fried dishes such as fried green tomatoes and fired okra. The new name "Burger Fresh & More", shows that it has become much more than just a burger shop. New (prepared when you order) items include chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken and southern style catfish.

Canada Family Food Service History

The Canada family moved to Conroe in 1935 with the purchase by B.H. Canada of a combination grocery store & ice cream parlor located on East Davis Street. It became Canada & Son Market after son Burr joined him upon returning from the Navy. Burr, who retired from Goodyear appliance Store ran the Willis Dairy Queen for James while his health allowed. James returned to Conroe (after a stint for a Fortune 100 in Houston) in 1982 starting his restaurant career with Bob's Crispy Chicken & Willis Dairy Queen. Other concepts he operated later included Canada's Dairy Castle, Conroe Lunch Box, Hole in the Wall Grill, Burgers/Beans and Things, Main Street Diner, Crazy Cajun Catfish, Charlottes' Tea Room & Grangerland Dairy Queen.

Both of James' children... Cara & Kevin... grew up working in the restaurants as well. Cara worked every summer during college selling breakfast tacos around town to help earn her way through college. She became known affectionately as the "taco girl". Kevin went on to own two restaurants of his own and will soon be opening the "City Cafe" in New Waverly featuring home style southern comfort foods. Cara will be handling the marketing activities for both restaurants.

James' philosophy is simple... Start with quality foods well prepared at an affordable price and serve it within a family friendly atmosphere. He is well prepared to continue and enhance the reputation of "Burger Fresh & More" making it a fun and enjoyable experience.
